I just thought I would share my experience at work this week with you.

I work for an international company who manufactures industrial belting. We have a vacancy in our factory for a belt technician where they manually hand glue joints in the belts. There is no previous experience required but we are looking for a person with good manual dexterity and to work as part of a team. We advertise through employment agencies as they are able to find the most suitable candidates for us and have found some brilliant staff for us in the past. I actually started with my company the same way 20 years ago.

The vacancy has been looked at by several employment agencies and the first round of c.v.'s I received were for people such as qualified engineers, sales engineers, chefs and other highly qualified professional candidates. These people would either have not taken the job or stayed for a short while to bring some money in but moved at the first opportunity. All the agencies I deal with have always previously dealt with manufacturing jobs.

When I tackled the agencies about the quality of candidates they were putting forward, they said they were so inundated with people trying to register, that they were only taking on the best candidates. Higher salaries in job placements, means higher commission for them.

Now I have no objection to anyone who has gone out and got their qualifications and moved up the career ladder. However, what about all those millions who are unemployed but are not so well qualified. I know the Government goes on about benefit scroungers, but there are genuine people out there who want to work but are being overlooked by companies who could easily place them in secure employment. Manufacturing in the UK is so declined, that I am at a loss for words how we are going to keep this going when we are losing important skills in people who are not being looked after properly and pointed in the right direction into employment.

Next week I am going to have to look at other avenues of advertising this job as I have one lonely CV sat on my desk of a candidate who may possibly be suitable.
The job centre has always been useless in the past as again they seem incapable of matching the candidate to the job description.

Hi Jackie,

I can see your point of view here, in that you need people without qualifications and they are being overlooked by the employment agency, but I can also see that it is just as hard for the people who are being turned down for jobs because they are over qualified.
They have maybe had good jobs in the past, taken on mortgages etc, and then lost their jobs. They are desperate to get any job just to keep their heads above water. Maybe it is only temporary until something better comes along, but they need the money just as much as anyone else.
Perhaps it would be better to bypass the employment agencies, advertise in the press and do it on a first come first served basis, subject to interview of course.
Sorry, don't mean to argue with you because I agree with most of what you say, I just feel sorry for the people who are continually turned down for jobs because they are over qualified but desperately need an income.

Hi

I know of 3 social enterprises in our area who take on NEETs (Not in education employment or training) kids who would otherwise have zip.

They are catering, or working in printing or doing building.

I think social enterprise is the way forward on these things with kids who need a job and with a support or 2 could hold a job down, I really do!


One of these social enterprises have just got the contract for downing street....

I quite agree with you. It is heartbreaking for anyone qualified or not when they lose their jobs and I would employ all of them if I could.

My point is that there are now so many people unemployed that there is not enough help out there to channel them into a job which suits their qualifications, but also ultimately gives them job satisfaction and to become part of a team where they feel they can fit in. We have many times employed people who are over qualified for the positions we have offered and they have been so miserable in the job that I have watched them lose the sparkle and life they came to the interview with. Yes we have helped them pay their mortgage and keep their families going but it is soul destroying to see how it destroys them and eventually they walk out of the job totally defeated. I have other staff who have been with us for 20+ years who love the work they do because this is what they want to do with their lives.

The Government is banging on about getting people into employment and what they are going to do about it. BUT something needs to be done fast before these people lose everything, not only materialistically but emotionally. I live in a large new town where investment in employment was high, especially by foreign companies but over the last five years, this has really started to dwindle away. There is nothing going on in Shropshire that I can see is going to help the situation.

With the closing of industries in Britain over the last quarter of a century, it is unbelievable how many skilled workers we have lost and will never get back again.

Yes I will be advertising the job and am thankful that I will be able to help one person, but my heart breaks for the millions out there who are hanging on by the tips of their fingers.

If you met me you would see that I am the least political person you are ever likely to meet, but this week my faith has been dented and I would like to cure the world but know that is impossible.

Jenni - I am going to find out if there are any social enterprises in our area and let's hope they shape Downing Street up.
